Abstract

Design plays an essential role in the ease of use of many devices. With modern medical devices primarily using digital displays, the design of said devices’ displays has been ever more essential. Nevertheless, the number of device recalls due to medical device display design issues is relatively high. Between 2012 and 2015, around 5% of the medical devices recalled by the Food and Drug Administration of the United States were due to user interface (UI) issues. This research aims to understand quantitatively if design research is being actively pursued with the aim of improving medical device display UI. To gather data, a web scraper was used to gather a large sum of articles using keywords relating to user interface and user experience (UX and UI) design and medical devices. A point system was built to assess whether such articles/publications discussed the two topics simultaneously. This research also assessed whether the articles were published in primarily medical journals or design journals. This research found a huge deficiency in the number of articles/publications discussing medical device display UX and UI design. Hence, more research with a design approach is needed on medical device display UX and UI design.
